Review: Atreyu- In Our Wake
Atreyu is gearing up to release their seventh studio album In Our Wake. This album is a step in a slightly different direction for Atreyu and it’s glorious. There honestly isn’t a bad song on In Our Wake because each song is so different from the next, really showing how much the guys are able to adapt and change without losing their core sound.
Lyrically this album is inspiring and has full potential to reach fans on a whole new level. Atreyu clearly put their all into this album and I personally think In Our Wake is their best yet.
The title track In Our Wake was the band’s first single off of the album. The lyrics of the song are focused on the legacy that someone leaves behind when they pass on and it really makes you think. Between the beautiful vocals of Brandon Saller and a killer guitar solo this song is not only inspirational and thoughtful but it’s an all-around solid tune.
Moving on to “Nothing Will Ever Change” which has a little more of an old school Atreyu vibe. The entire chorus is pure gold, “I am thunder, I am rain, just a human hurricane, smashing everything that stands in front of me.” I felt that line in my soul. The guitar solo in this song is also one of the best on the album.
“Blind Deaf & Dumb” is another one of my favorites from the album. “How can you fix the world if you can’t fix yourself” is one of the most brutally honest lines off of this album. This whole song is a big wakeup call and I love it.
“Terrified” is an all-around beautiful song. It is a bit different from the rest of the album with more of an electronic sound to it but it is the perfect slow song for this album. The vocals on this track tugged at my heartstrings in the best way.
“Safety Pin” is another in your face song. The melody of the chorus is completely different from the rest of the song and it works perfectly. Lyrically this is one of the main songs that hit home for me from this album and I really feel like fans will feel the same.
Lastly, the closing track “Super Hero” that features Aaron Gillespie of Underoath and M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold is one of the coolest songs from this album. It actually feels like a goodbye at the end of the album. The lyrics are beautiful and heartfelt and the instrumentals really set this song apart from the rest of the album.
The guys in Atreyu have had one hell of a career thus far and In Our Wake is an in your face reminder that they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. Musically the band is growing and moving in a direction that fans will appreciate without losing that sound that they have come to love.
The meaning and the lyrics behind the songs are totally relevant to the world around us and are sending an overall important message. In Our Wake is already one of my favorite releases of 2018 and I cannot wait to see some of these songs played live.
