When listening to a Psychostick album, you can usually expect two things: outstanding guitar riffs and hooks and then, and most importantly, you can almost always expect to laugh…at least once or twice.
On Psychosticks’ latest effort, Space Vampires vs. Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D, they throw the comedy in your face, wipe it off and throw it right back again…over and over again. I mean, come on, what would you expect with a CD of that title, right?
The album starts with a “live” track, which, I’ll be honest, made me think it was a live album, though it wasn’t. The track has front man Rob Kersey interacting with the crowd with very funny lines. At one point he tells them to hug their neighbor and tells them they’re sweet.
Track two, “Sadface : (” talks about peoples’ bad luck coming from actions of their own fault, therefore “I don’t give a s**t.” The track samples “The Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson and the viral Antoine Dodson “Bed Intruder Song.”
Another song Psychostick samples is the Drowning Pool hit, “Bodies.” They put an interesting spin on it, talking about numbers- “I can only count to four.”
Throw in “My Clingy Girlfriend” (a song about a girlfriend who seems promising but goes psychotic on the narrator), “It’s Just a Movie, Stupid” (an ode to all who are waiting for that perfect movie relationship) and “The Root of All Evil” (a metal-oriented narrative of a dentist visit) and you have one of the funniest metal albums of the year.
Aside from the comedy, the instrumentals are superb on Space Vampires vs. Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D. Insane double-bass, ear-blasting guitar riffs and awesome breakdowns make this album a must-have, not just for Psychostick fans, but for metal fans in general.
